Abdullah Oduro: From the Question of Purpose to the Clarity of Tawhid

Abdullah Oduro grew up in a Ghanaian-American setting and spent part of his youth immersed in hip-hop culture. Amid music and questions about the future, a deeper question pressed on him: why was he here, and what should give shape to his life? [1]
He knew the name Islam but at first did not distinguish it clearly from the Nation of Islam. Friends explained the difference and spoke of God as Creator, unlike creation, and of the prophetic line from Adam to Muhammad. Tawhid expressed what he already believed about the Creator, yet he still needed time to understand what such recognition asked of him. [1] [2]
His friend Mike was also asking about Islam. Oduro recalled going with him to a nearby mosque roughly two weeks before embracing Islam. At the entrance, Mike hesitated because he felt unworthy of taking that step. Oduro encouraged him, and Mike entered with him; Oduro said they eventually embraced Islam. [3]
Oduro entered Islam in 1997. He continued learning after his decision and was admitted to the Islamic University of Madinah in 1999. [4]
