From Nigeria to Asian football

Emeka Ezeugo is a Nigerian footballer and coach. He represented Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup, and his career took him to clubs in India and Bangladesh. When his conversion was reported in February 2012, he was coaching Mohammedan Sporting Club in Dhaka.

Ezeugo did not describe his decision as detached from reflection. He told reporters that he was naturally curious and had studied different religions. During that search, he found the life of the Prophet Muhammad inspiring and connected his choice of Islam with what he had learned about the Prophet’s life and message.

A decision after study

During the week before the original report appeared, Ezeugo visited a Muslim cleric with people from the club, including its manager, a former teammate and other officials. The report establishes the visit and his announcement, but gives neither an exact date for the declaration nor its wording or setting in detail.

He subsequently announced the name Mustafa Mohammed. His family remained Roman Catholic, yet he said they accepted his decision and regarded him as old enough to choose for himself. He also received help from Bangladeshi friends as he began this new stage.

Prayer and a more disciplined beginning

The report says that prayer entered his daily life and that he saw Islam as giving him new direction and greater discipline. Changing his passport to the new name was only a future intention he expressed at the time, not a completed act.

His published account is concise, but its course is clear: curiosity led to comparison, the Prophet’s life became a declared influence, a decision followed in February 2012, and its early practice appeared in prayer and discipline. That account did not provide a fuller record of every question, book or conversation that preceded the choice.
