What sustains a person’s reliance on God when so much is being lost? That was the question behind Nefertari Moonn’s interest as she watched Palestinians endure suffering. Speaking to Anadolu in December 2023, she attributed her decision to investigate Islam to their courage and faith. She wanted to understand what sustained them. [NM-S2]

In late 2023, Nefertari Moonn was working as an internet comic artist and independent fashion designer in Tampa, Florida. She described herself then as spiritual rather than religious. Islam was not wholly unfamiliar in her household: her husband was Muslim, and his copy of the Quran was already close at hand. [NM-S1, NM-S2]

She picked up her husband’s Quran to understand what could sustain that kind of reliance on God. She also began learning about Islamic and Palestinian history. [NM-S1, NM-S2, NM-S3]

Moonn said that passage after passage resonated with her. In describing this reading, she associated it with peace, understanding, and a sense of return. [NM-S1, NM-S3]

Her reading led her to embrace Islam. She had made her declaration of faith by 20 November 2023. [NM-S1]

In her Anadolu interview, she expressed hope for the Palestinians’ safety and said she was praying for them. [NM-S2]
