Firdaus Wong: When Peace Did Not Arrive at Once

What if you make a decision you believe to be true, yet feel none of the sudden relief you expected? Does the absence of an emotional climax make the decision false—or can conviction begin quietly and deepen through years of learning?
Firdaus Wong, also known as Wong Wai Hung (黄伟雄), recalled leaving Buddhism at eighteen and calling himself a freethinker. After moving from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching at twenty-two, he began asking what life was for, what followed death, and how to find the way to paradise. [1]
Firdaus asked a Muslim friend about believing in God without seeing Him. In his account, the friend pointed to wind, known through its effects, and drew his attention to the creation around him. Wong said this conversation influenced his choice of Islam. [1]
On 10 August 2005, aged twenty-two, he recited the testimony of faith before Ustaz Imran Abdullah at PERKIM, as he later recalled in interviews. [1] [2]
Wong said the shahada did not immediately bring serenity, even while he prayed, fasted and paid zakat. In 2011 he attended a four-day course on the Prophet’s life. He recalled weeping as he came to understand that life and the migration more deeply, and feeling as though he had embraced Islam anew. [1]
According to his account, Wong left a well-paid job in 2013 to focus on education and outreach. Multiracial Reverted Muslims was formally registered in 2014. In a 2018 interview, he said he had received no Bumiputera privileges after conversion. [1] [3]
The following years also brought difficulties. He described being shunned by some friends, and in 2022 spoke of threats, insults and paint thrown over his car. He said he concentrated on his intentions and actions, which he could control, rather than other people’s actions. [1] [2]
For Wong, the decision came before the peace he later described. Years of study deepened his understanding, and education eventually became the focus of his working life. [1]
