Mercy Aigbe: When Love Opened a Door and She Chose to Enter

Mercy Aigbe Adeoti was already known across Nigeria as a Nollywood actor when her religious decision became public news. She married filmmaker Kazeem Adeoti in 2022. In early April 2023, she appeared at a Ramadan lecture they hosted together and introduced a new name: Hajia Meenah Mercy Adeoti. [2][4]
Aigbe later described herself as open-minded about religion. She said that after the COVID-19 period she had struggled to attend church consistently. [2]
Her husband was a devout Muslim, and Aigbe said plainly that her love for him made the transition easier. At the same time, she stressed that she had chosen Islam for herself and was old enough to take responsibility for her actions. [2][3]
At the Ramadan lecture reported on 2 and 3 April 2023, she asked people to call her Hajia Meenah Mercy Adeoti and carefully specified Meenah “with the H.” She spoke of excitement and fulfilment and described the lecture as a chance for people to learn what Allah says and what they should follow. [4]
In her TVC interview on Your View, reported in December 2023, Aigbe spoke of her excitement about learning Islam. In her account, the decision had become the beginning of continuing learning in everyday life. [2][3]
Learning quickly became practical. During her first Ramadan, she spoke about the difficulty of waking for sahur and staying awake during the day, while also saying she was adapting better to the fast. [4]
Later coverage reported that she accompanied her husband on a devotional journey to Mecca in June. [3]
Aigbe said the decision made her bond with her husband tighter and sweeter. [2]
Aigbe’s experience offers a lesson to anyone influenced by the faith of someone close: closeness may open a door, but it cannot replace questions, learning and ownership of the choice. Nor is a beginning measured by the ease of waking for sahur in a first Ramadan or by mastering every practice immediately. A path matures when an announced decision grows into widening knowledge and repeated action freely undertaken.
