How Can a Helpful Project Continue beyond Its Founder?
A small service may work because one person knows its details and follows them every day. Its vulnerability appears when that person is unavailable and nobody knows where resources are or who can make a decision. Continuity can be planned while the work is still running, at a scale suited to the service.
Document what another person needs
Describe the beneficiary, the task, how it is performed and its usual timing. Identify the current resource and its reviewer. The document can be short; it should let a qualified person understand the next step without relying on your memory. Separate working instructions from private information that not every team member needs.
Make correction part of continuity
An educational file can remain available while a statement in it becomes outdated. Decide how an error can be reported, who reviews it and how a corrected version becomes visible. An edition identifier and review date are more useful than a promise that a resource will always remain accurate.
Practise a handover
Let another person perform one bounded task with appropriate supervision, then review what the instructions missed. The trial may reveal a training gap, an access issue or an unclear responsibility. Use appropriate service roles instead of sharing personal passwords, and protect rights in data and materials.
Check that continuity remains useful
Record actual use or service delivered and ask recipients what needs to change. Keeping an activity alive is not an end in itself if the need has disappeared or harm has emerged. A responsible decision may be to reduce, transfer, combine or close it.
