Five-year-old Adam with his hijab-wearing mother at home

The story

Five-year-old Adam was at home with his mother, getting ready for the family meal. He saw Mum carrying a pot of soup and sliding the small table into place.

“I want a big job!” Adam announced.

He reached toward the pot.

“The pot is hot,” his mother said calmly. “That is a grown-up job. Helping does not mean carrying something that could hurt you.”

Adam looked at the table. “Then I’ll lift it by myself.”

“It is heavy, and the hallway is narrow,” Mum said. “But there is another job. Ask: what small thing would help right now?”

Adam marched around the room like a job inspector. The cushions were ready. The cups sat on a high shelf. The spoons were ready too.

Then Adam spotted the box of napkins.

“Do you need these, Mum?” he asked.

“Yes. One beside every place, please, and a few extra in the middle.”

Adam counted the chairs: one, two, three, four. He took four napkins and set one beside each plate.

The extra napkins came next. He almost dropped the whole box onto the table, but stopped. “How many do we need in the middle?”

“Three will be enough for now,” his mother answered.

Adam folded each one in half. The edges were not perfectly even, so he opened one and tried again.

“Now every place has a napkin,” Mum said. “That was the job.”

Adam almost said, “I did everything!” Then he noticed the soup, table, spoons, and cushions. “I arranged the napkins,” he said. “You prepared the rest.”

His mother sat down to taste the soup. A drop of water landed beside her cup, so she used the napkin beside her plate to wipe it away.

Adam smiled. His job had not been big, but it had been real, safe, and useful to the home.

After the meal, he returned the clean napkins to their box. “What small thing would help now, Mum?” he asked.

“Now we can rest together for a while,” she said.

Adam sat beside his mother. Rest mattered too, and helping at home was not a race for the biggest job.
