How to Take Reading Notes You Can Understand and Use

Copying an appealing sentence does not guarantee understanding or a way to find it again. A useful note preserves the passage when needed, distinguishes your interpretation and leaves room for uncertainty. It can be very short when its purpose is clear.

Separate four kinds of notes

Keep an exact quotation, checked against the text, distinct from your own explanation, an unresolved question and an action you choose. This separation reduces the risk of publishing a personal inference as though it were the author’s words or a religious source.

Keep a reference you can revisit

Record the title, file identifier and PDF viewer page or chapter. Printed numbering can differ from the viewer, and a later edition may move material. A section description alongside a number makes the note more useful. The book page also lets you save your place locally.

Write a question for your next session

Instead of writing only “useful chapter,” identify what you want to understand: why an action was qualified, or how an example differs from a general principle. Do not rush to close the question. Another chapter, a referenced source or qualified guidance may be needed.

Review the note

After a few days, try explaining the idea before reopening the text. Compare your explanation with the source and correct it. If you chose an action, describe what actually happened. Keep private notes on your device and avoid unnecessary sensitive information about other people.

Read the source and try a worksheet
