The Last Biscuit — An Illustrated Read-Aloud Story
A picture story to read together, for ages three to five.

Yasser’s sister Layan put the last biscuit in a small box and stuck a label with her name on the lid. “I’ll come back for it after my game,” she said. Yasser’s snack was a red apple on a green plate.

Yasser came into the kitchen by himself to get his snack. He saw the little box on the table and opened it. Inside was the crisp biscuit, sprinkled with tiny sesame seeds.

Yasser pulled the box closer and glanced at the doorway. He reached towards the biscuit… then stopped. No one else was in the kitchen to say, “Leave it there.”

Yasser saw his sister Layan’s name on the label. He remembered how she had once searched for something she had saved. He closed the box and put it back. Then he took his apple.

Yasser sat down and ate his apple. When he heard footsteps in the hall, he did not open the box again. He wiped the place where his plate had been and left the table as he had found it.

His sister Layan returned and found her box in the same place, with the biscuit still inside. “There it is!” she said. “It was here, with your name on it,” said Yasser. He finished his apple, and Layan’s biscuit stayed Layan’s.
This is an original fictional story, not an account of a historical event.
