The Small Toy Is Enough for Today — A Shared-Reading Picture Story
B17 · Ages 3–5 · Madarej Stories
Maryam is four years old and is with her father. In this original fictional story, she discovers that contentment does not erase sadness, and that what she has can open a new kind of play.

1. The big playhouse

At the shop, Maryam saw a huge playhouse for her little toy. It had a door, two windows, and a long staircase. “I want it!” she said. “We are not buying it today,” Baba answered.
2. A feeling understood

Maryam left the shop feeling sad. Baba did not tell her to stop being sad, and he did not promise that she would get the playhouse tomorrow. “I know you really wanted it,” he said.
3. A box waiting for an idea

At home, Maryam picked up her small toy and noticed an empty tissue box. Baba handled the scissors and cut a safe doorway in one side for her.
4. A small house

A little lid became a bed, and a piece of cloth became a rug. “This house isn’t big, and I still like the one at the shop,” Maryam said. “I understand,” Baba replied.
5. Every idea widens the play

Maryam drew two windows and placed a green lid by the door like a shrub. Then she invented another room under a chair. The house changed whenever she had a new idea.
6. A safe place and a whole story

Maryam chose a safe place for the house beside her bed. “Tomorrow I’ll make a short ladder,” she said. Her wish had not vanished, but her small toy was enough for one whole story.
