A drop of water fell
on the table.

“I need the napkin,”
said Dad.

The napkin was near me.
I reached, but it was a little too far away.

Dad moved it closer.

I picked it up
and passed it to him.

Dad wiped away the drop.
“The napkin arrived,” he said.
It was a small job, and it helped.

Before lunch,
the table was empty.

Dad set down the plates.

Mum, Dad’s wife, set down the cups.

One light napkin was left.
“A little job for you,” said Dad.

He brought the napkin close
and helped me hold it.
I put it beside my plate.

A plate from Dad. A cup from Mum.
A napkin from me. Our jobs were different,
and the table was ready.

Dad sat beside me
and opened a little book.

On the page was a blue door.
“Door,” he said.

Then he waited.
I looked at the page.

I touched the blue door with one finger.
“You saw it,” said Dad.

He lifted the edge of the thick page.
I held it with him.
Together, we turned it slowly.

On the next page was a little house.
Dad did not quiz me. We looked together.
A page for him, and a page with me.

“It’s time to grow quiet,” said Dad.
He closed the book.

Our first step:
the book went back on the shelf.

He gathered the blocks.
Our second step:
the blocks went back in their box.

He switched off the bright light
and left a soft light on.

Our third step:
I sat in his arms.
No more clattering blocks.
No more turning pages.

“A quiet night,” Dad said softly.
He carried me to my safe sleep space.
The sounds grew quiet.

I sat in my seat
with the table in front of me.

Mum set down small pieces of food
that were right for me.

In the middle sat a warm loaf of bread.
I pointed to it.

“Bread,” said Dad.
“Allah has provided this food for us.”

Then Dad said to his wife, my mum, “Thank you.”
Mum smiled.

“Alhamdulillah. Praise be to Allah,” said Dad.
I listened and looked at my food.
The loaf was on the table.
We were gathered around it.
