The public knew Clarence Seedorf as a Dutch footballer of Surinamese origin whose career had taken him through several countries and major clubs. Speaking about his upbringing, he said he had been raised Catholic, but that his parents had not forced him to choose Catholicism. [1, 2]

His travels introduced him to many cultures and beliefs. He recalled taking an interest in different religions and ideas, including Buddhism, and described how the years he spent moving around the world had broadened his outlook. [1]

In the Dutch conversation reported by FunX in April 2024, he said that life had been going well before he chose Islam. Yet he described another feeling that had accompanied him: he considered himself a world citizen, belonging a little to many places without feeling fully part of a settled community. [1]

Islam’s sense of worldwide community attracted him, and he connected his choice with the wider perspective he had gained through travel. His Muslim wife Sophia had helped him understand Islam’s meaning more deeply, and he gave her particular thanks in his public announcement. [1, 2]

On 4 March 2022, news reports carried his announcement that he had joined the Muslim family. In his message he thanked those who had congratulated him and expressed happiness at joining brothers and sisters around the world—the sense of belonging to which he would return in the later conversation. [2, 3]

He chose to keep his name. In the same message, he explained that he had not changed the name Clarence Seedorf and would continue using the name his parents had given him. [2, 3]
