Monica Rahima: from a distant image to a personal search

An empty stone passage crossed by sunlight beneath arches

At a 2014 press conference in Chennai, the actress known as Monica opened with an Islamic greeting and said that she had embraced Islam in 2010. The press conference was not the beginning of her relationship with the faith; it was the public announcement of a decision she had kept private for nearly four years while speaking with her family first.

She said her earlier image of Islam had not been positive and that, like many people, she had associated it with extremism. She had to handle many errands alone in crowded places, where being recognised as an actress made movement difficult. She tried wearing a burqa for privacy and comfort. The calm she experienced then prompted a question: what was the Islam she had not yet understood?

She kept asking questions and met Muslim friends. Through her friend Malik she came to know Hasan, whom she described as an older brother. His sincerity and conduct impressed her. When she wondered how he could live with such character, people around her connected it to what Islam taught him. This was not her whole decision, but it widened the search.

Monica spoke of learning a great deal about Islam and coming to value its principles after understanding them. She therefore rejected the explanation circulating in the press: she had not converted for a man or for money. In her view, changing religion for a passing relationship would not produce a faith one could actually live.

Her family included Hindu and Christian backgrounds. She recalled initial opposition, followed by relatives deciding that their love and bond with her mattered more than the difference. When she chose the name M. G. Rahima, she retained the initials of her parents’ names, making clear that her change did not erase her family connection.

She also announced that she would leave acting. Parting from a career she had known since childhood was painful, she said, but she wanted the decision to be clear so that work offers would stop. It was a personal choice in her story, not a rule imposed on others.

The published material does not identify the day or place of her declaration of faith. It does preserve her direct statement that the change occurred in 2010 and that she announced it publicly on 30 May 2014. The story’s strength lies in her movement from a distant judgment to informed questioning, and in her insistence that her reason be heard from her rather than from rumours.
